The "menu," with its quotes from Gandhi "Nonviolence is the finest quality of
the soul." and Martin Luther King "History is cluttered with the wreckage of nations
and individuals that pursued their self-defeating path of hate." sets the tone.
The
menu presents questions and quotes from the play Via Dolorossa to spark conversation
at each table. Hoummus, pita bread, olives, and drinks are served. "Arabs
and Jews eat the same food," says Andy Shallal, the owner of Mimi's American Bistro.
He believes that sharing food, the tearing of the pita bread, the dipping
of the bread into the mutual bowl of hoummus is the beginning of a human bond
that promotes understanding. At Mimi's, Shallal also serves a "peace menu"
that includes dates and figs. |
